Spot It! sets we love:
I have a 4 year old daughter and as her recent birthday was approaching I was standing in the board games section of our local store tossing up whether or not my girl was ready for board games. There was the classic snakes and ladders, a game like Trouble and a few other fancy new ones but ultimately I decided on Spot It! which was a fun looking game in wee packaging with cool illustrations.
I took the plunge and chucked it in with her other 4th bday gifts and I am so happy I did!
Spot It! is now a total staple in our house. It’s one of those rare games that doesn’t bore adults to tears while still being simple enough for little hands. But if you’re wondering whether a 4-year-old can genuinely join in on the fun, the short answer is yes, absolutely—with a couple of gentle tweaks to how you play.

Why We Love Spot It! in Our House
The premise of Spot It! is pure genius: any two cards in the deck will ALWAYS have exactly one matching symbol between them. That’s it! No reading required, no complex turn counting, and no complicated setup.
Because it relies purely on visual matching, preschoolers actually stand a fighting chance against older kids and adults. It’s a fantastic little brain booster for visual focus, fast recognition, and building vocabulary, all disguised as quick-fire fun.
Choosing the Right Version: Plain, Bluey, or Disney Princess?
We currently have the classic edition, but the beauty of Spot It! is just how many awesome versions are out there now!
If you’re looking to grab a set, here’s what to look out for:
- Spot It! Animals: This is the one we have!! It’s a great all-rounder. Also helped my 2 year old learn animals when we played it ‘with’ her.
- Bluey Spot It!: A massive hit if your kids are obsessed with Bluey and Bingo. Seeing familiar characters makes matching even faster.
- Disney Edition Spot It!: All the cutest Disney and Pixar characters in one game.
- Spot It! Classic: Lots of cool easy to recongise illustrations like snowflakes, flowers, sunglasses and keys.
- Camping Spot It!: Omg i’m actually obsessed with this one for Kiwi kids camping around the country over summer. This one would be so good in santa sacks for Christmas!!
- Stitch Spot It!: Stitch is a legend and if your kid is a fan of him, then they will love this.
- Spiderman Spot It!: Spidey lovers unite.
- Lord of the Rings Spot It!: Another Kiwi skewed Spot It! The illustrations are sooo cute.
- Marvel Spot It!: Young fellas will be all over this.
- Harry Potter Spot It!: HP fans need to get amongst this!
- Disney Princess Edition Spot It: This is currently top of my wishlist!
I think I have also seen a K-Pop Demon Hunters Spot It! (I’d say that set will be the trendiest of the year), Sports Spot It! and a Star Wars Spot It! floating around too.
This year I’m heavily leaning toward picking up the Disney Princess Edition next. My girl has reached that stage where she recognises all the princesses, and her face lights up whenever she spots them.
Plus, with so much gorgeous Disney Princess stuff popping up around Kmart, The Warehouse, and Farmers at the moment, it makes it super easy to bundle the game into a themed birthday gift or a festive Santa sack!

What Makes Spot It! So Good?
Forget the stiff descriptions on the back of the game box—here is what you’re actually getting:
- Builds Quick Brainpower: It’s a fast visual treasure hunt that gets little brains working hard to spot matching pictures before anyone else.
- Five Games in One Tin: You get five quick variation mini-games in the box, so when the kids get bored of playing one way, you can instantly switch it up.
- Equal Playing Field: Perfect for family game nights, playdates, or quick rainy-day sanity savers. Since there’s no reading needed, 4-year-olds can play right alongside older siblings.
- Indestructible & Travel-Ready: Most sets come packed in a sturdy little metal tin with thick, durable cards. Toss it in your bag for road trips, camping, or keeping them occupied at cafes or while out for tea.
How to Play Spot It! (The Basics)
- The Setup: Reveal two cards face-up in the middle of the table.
- The Hunt: Everyone scans both cards at the same time looking for the one matching symbol between them.
- The Call: As soon as you see the match, shout it out loud (e.g., “Cinderella!” or “Tree!”) and claim the card!
- Most cards win!!!
My #1 Tip for Playing with a 4-Year-Old
The standard rules are all about speed—whoever shouts first wins the card. But with a 4-year-old, a high-speed race can quickly lead to frustration if older players or adults are snapping up matches too fast.
Our Favorite House Rule: Turn-Based Play or Co-op Mode
- Turn-Based: Instead of a frantic race, take turns! Lay two cards down and let your 4-year-old take her time finding the match without anyone rushing her.
- Co-op Mode: Put down two cards and work together as a team to see how many matches you can find in two minutes. It keeps the excitement high without any competitive tears
- Solo Mode: Even though Spot It! is technically not a solo game, it keeps my 4 year old occupied while she ‘practices’ her matching! You could level it up with a stopwatch of timer too.
But I will admit, my four year old, almost five year now is actually pretty quick at the cards and often snaps up the Spot It! pair before I even glance at it! Which means we often just play the rules on the back of the box.

Yes they can! It just may need a few tweaks. While the original game requires speed, you can alter the rules to make it more about learning for younger brains. My two year old learned her animals with the help of our Spot It! Animal set.
