10 Must-Have Lunchbox Recipes Every Tradie Needs in Their Smoko Bag

If you’re packing a lunchbox for a tradie, you already know the golden rules: it has to be filling, easy to grab on-site, and taste fantastic cold just in case they have no way (or time!) to heat it up.

Unfortunately a couple energy drinks and a few ciggies or a freshly charged vape doesn’t cut it!

With early morning starts, physical work, and rarely a microwave in sight depending on the job and trade, standard dinner leftovers don’t always cut it. Over the years of packing daily site lunches for my own tradie husband, I’ve locked down a rotation of solid, reliable recipes that keep him full from first smoko straight through until knock-off time.

I love recreating my favourite recipes from around the web—and while I’m linking to the original creators below, I use and abuse these recipes regularly as they are that good and every single photo here is my own real-life version snapped straight off our kitchen bench!

Here are 10 toolbox-worthy recipes to keep your tradie happy, energised, and very well-fed.

Tradie Cowboy Cookies

Type: Sweet Treat/Afternoon Energy Boost

Why it works: These are packed with a bit of everything—oats, chocolate, coconut, dried fruit and nuts—and they’re super flexible, so you can swap in whatever you’ve got in the pantry. They freeze brilliantly, making them ideal when you’re running low on groceries at the end of the week.

  • Air Fryer Hack: Keep a batch of raw dough balls in the freezer. Pop one straight into the air fryer at 160°C for 10 minutes in the morning, and he’ll have a freshly baked biscuit ready for his first smoko!

Cheesy Mousetraps

Type: Warm brekkie, easy to eat for a busy lunch

Why it works: Mousetraps are nothing new, and you can literally throw almost anything with cheese on a piece of bread and you’ll have a pretty bloody delicious mousetrap, but this recipe with the onion soup mix and relish is sooooo good.

  • Perfect for day old sourdough!! If the sourdough doesn’t get eaten all in one day, this is my go to to use it up for the next day. This would also work well on thick cut day old breadmaker bread too!

4 Ingredient Sausage Rolls

Type: Yummy lunch that contributes to 5+ A Day

Why it works: Who would have thought the best ever and easiest sausage roll recipe for tradies (and kids!!) has PUMPKIN in it!? This recipe is using just four ingredients, and it is still yummy like that, but adding in some herbs and spices takes it up another level! I often add in paprika, cumin and fresh rosemary from the garden.

Chocolate Chip Biscuits

choc chip cranberry

Type: Sweet treat

Why it works: These are called ‘The Best Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies’ and it’s true, there are none that come close to how good these are!! Make it exact to the recipe and you will have perfect choc chip cookies. Freeze some rolled up balls of cookie dough in the freezer and use the airfryer trick above to save time in a pinch!

In the ones above I actually chucked some cranberries in and they tasted so good!!!

Bagels

Type: Savoury

Why it works: These bagels are GOATed! I make them lots and they have also been super great for me on my weight loss journey too as I cut them thin and use them in place of bread. You can make them sweet by loading them with jam or nutella or chucking a sugar glaze or choc chips in them, or load them up savoury as either a sandwich or so they are like a pizza.

Potato Salad

Type: Savoury

Why it works: There are lots of benefits to spuds! Obviously the mayo kind of cancels it out but our tradie men burn a lot of calories so they are fine hahaha. I just buy one of those ETA Potato Salad jars (they are tangy, so you could also use Best Foods Mayo and add an apple cider vinegar for a diff taste), I use potatos, peas, red onion, bacon and grated cheese. I’ve also randomly grated apple in before which was yum! Or added canned corn kernals too.

I don’t have an actual recipe written up for this, I just go by heart 🤣

Corn & Bacon Pies

Type: Savoury

Why it works: This mixture is so versatile! It works in puff pastry as quiches, in white bread in your muffin tins as bread baskets, as a yummy toastie filling recipe and even as a mousetrap (yes, this is another one I love to use on day old sourdough bread!!!)

Afghan Slice using Weetbix

Type: Sweet

Why it works: The classic old school Edmond’s Recipe Book Afghan biscuit recipe makes a banging slice! I never have cornflakes in the house so just swap it for crushed weetbix and it makes a supper yum, buttery, chocolate lunchbox treat!

Savoury Scones

Type: Savoury

Why it works: These savoury scones are so easy to whip up and I love making them BIG. So just like 6 great big scone dollops go in the oven rather than 12 little ones. I cut them in half and later heaps of butter in them so that they stay nice and (sorry to use this word) moist on site.
