Fun Ways to Use Star Templates

Star outlines are one of the most useful crafting shapes to keep on hand! Here are some popular ways to use them in downstream art projects and learning activities:

  • Matariki Celebrations: Trace or cut out stars to represent the Matariki star cluster (the Pleiades). Have children decorate seven or nine stars (depending on your local iwi tradition) to make a hanging mobile or window display reflecting on the Māori New Year.
  • Southern Cross & Flag Crafts: Use the smaller template sizes to craft the Southern Cross constellation (Crux) for Waitangi Day, Australia Day, or local night-sky astronomy lessons.
  • ANZAC Day Keepsakes: Pair star cutouts with red poppies for ANZAC Day reflection stars, wreath accents, or remembrance cards.
  • Christmas in Summer Decor: Print larger stars on thick cardstock, paint or glitter them, and create tree toppers, outdoor garland, or festive window displays for Christmas in July or summer holiday crafting.
  • Learning & Math Activities: Great for early learners! Print multiple stars per page for counting, color sorting, pattern-making, or name tags.
  • Cards & Stencilling: Use a cut-out star as a stencil for sponge painting, or paste colored paper stars onto folded cardstock to make personalized birthday and thank-you cards.

Crafting Tips

  1. Paper Type: If you are using watercolors, glue, or heavy glitter, print the template directly onto thick cardstock (180–210 gsm) or trace the template onto cardboard to make it sturdy.
  2. Easy Cutting for Kids: For younger children learning to use scissors, encourage them to cut slightly outside the black line for a clean look without needing high precision.
  3. Lamination: Laminate your cutouts after coloring so you can reuse them year after year for seasonal decor or classroom resource kits.
  4. Need a size that’s not listed? You don’t need a new file! Just open your printer settings and adjust the Page Scale or Custom Scale percentage (e.g., scale down to 50% for mini stars or scale up to fill the page) before hitting print.

Note: These printable templates are free for personal, homeschool, or classroom use.
