If you’ve ever looked at Business Premier seat upgrades on Air New Zealand and wondered, “Is it actually worth dropping the extra cash when traveling with tiny humans?“—you are definitely not alone.
In 2025, we decided to bite the bullet and fly Business Premier on Air NZ from Auckland (AKL) to Nadi, Fiji (NAD). We were traveling with a 3-year-old and a 10-month-old baby.
Now, look—a 3-hour hop to the Pacific Islands isn’t quite the same test of endurance as an 18-hour haul to London or LA, so take this as a snapshot rather than a global marathon comparison! But if you’re contemplating treating the family to a little luxury on your next island getaway, here is our honest experience of how it actually played out on board.
✈️ Air NZ Business Premier with Kids: Quick Takeaways
Flight Details: AKL → NAD (Fiji), ~3 hours. Mid-morning departure, early afternoon arrival.
Kids’ Ages: 3 years old (in her own seat) & 10 months old (infant lap seat).
Best Seat Config: Back three seats in Business Premier for quick galley/loo access and less foot traffic.
The Verdict: Worth it for the effortless airport check-in, extra lounge space, superior meal service peace, and extra room to wrangle a baby.

The Setup & Our Seat Selection
For this flight, we booked the back three seats in the Business Premier cabin.
Because Air NZ’s Business Premier pods face inwards/diagonally, seat layout is everything when you have young kids. We set it up so my husband and 3-year-old daughter took the window seats, while I sat directly across from my daughter in a middle-aisle pod with our 10-month-old on my lap.
Sitting in the back row was a game-changer (6K, 7J and 7K). You’re super close to the crew and restrooms, and you don’t feel like you’re in the middle of everyone else’s quiet cabin experience if a toddler meltdowns hits. My husband could easily turn and reach over the seat to help my daughter, and I was directly across from her and in eye-sight so always knew we were there with her.

Flight Timing & “Can Your Kid Handle the Jandal?”
Timing is half the battle when flying with littles. We opted for a mid-morning departure landing in the early afternoon. This fit our 3-year-old’s routine nicely, as she was still partial to a day nap.
To give you some context on her temperament—she’s a pretty well-travelled little girl! Prior to this trip, she had already been to Australia three times and had logged at least 10 domestic flights around New Zealand. She’s super communicative, confident in her own seat, and knows the drill with planes.
If your toddler is used to sitting still and listening, Business Premier gives them their own cozy little kingdom. But even if they’re a bit wilder, the sheer space and screen size are huge distractions!
If your toddler is more on the clingy/nervous side, then Premium Economy may work best for you as in Business your toddler will need to sit buckled in their own seat for take off and landing.
The Packed Activity Bag vs. Reality
Like any organised mum, I went into this flight prepared for war. We packed a dedicated hanging toilet bag full of:
- Brand new fidget toys
- Mini figurines
- Colouring pages featuring her favourite characters
- A tablet loaded with shows (something she rarely gets at home)
- A massive supply of lollipops and her favourite snacks
The reality? We actually didn’t touch a single thing for her.
My daughter was so cozy in her big lay-flat seat that she fell fast asleep before we even cleared the tarmac! She slept almost the entire way to Fiji.
Can you believe it!!! My husband and I were gobsmacked, he was stoked with the extra food (he ate hers haha). But… at least we were prepared 🤣

The 10-Month-Old Factor & The Kapiti Ice Cream Win
While the 3-year-old slept like an angel, our 10-month-old had different plans. She only managed a brief 40-minute nap on the plane.
However, the timing of that nap was pure luck—she crashed right as the multi-course meal service started. Having both hands free in Business Class to enjoy a proper hot lunch with a real knife and fork was absolute bliss.
Right as I scooped up the very last bite of my Kapiti ice cream, two little eyes flung wide open, ready to party.
Since we still had over two hours to go, we had to pivot:
- Entertainment: We raided her sleeping sister’s activity bag for figurines and fidget toys.
- In-Flight Screen: Air NZ’s inflight entertainment had Cocomelon on tap, which brought us a solid chunk of peace.
- Feeding: She was formula-fed at the time, so having the extra elbow room in the pod made warm bottle prep and feeding in my arms so much easier than squeezed into Economy.
She chilled out, had her bottle, and was happy as Larry for the rest of the descent into Nadi. She had heaps of room around my feet to hang around in our pod without bothering other passengers.
Is Air NZ Business Premier Worth It with a Baby & Toddler?
For a 3-hour flight to Fiji, it’s definitely a luxury—not an absolute necessity. But here is why we loved it:
- Airport Ease: Priority check-in, extra baggage allowance, and lounge access at Auckland Airport mean you start the holiday completely stress-free before even boarding.
- Space to Wrangle: Having an infant on your lap in Economy can feel claustrophobic. In Business Premier, you have room to stretch your legs, hold the baby, and keep bags within arms’ reach without tripping over yourself.
- Peaceful Dining: Being able to eat a full hot meal while your baby naps in a lie-flat space across your lap is priceless.
If you’re thinking about booking it for a short island flight, my advice is go for it if it fits the budget—even if it’s just to start your holiday feeling relaxed instead of exhausted!
